Unsere Handwerker

History of the Panama hat
The raw material used to produce the famous Panama hat is the palm branch „carduvolica palmata“ better known as „paja toquilla“.
This plant ist mainly cultivated at Ecuadors’s coast and in the east of the country: in the provinces Manabi, Guayas, Esmeraldas and Morona Santiago.
When the Spanish conquerers reached today’s provinces of Guayas and Manabi, they described the natives with straw hats covering ears and neck. As those straw hats looked exactly like the nuns’ hoods in Europe, they decided to call the hats „toquillas“ (little hoods) and plam branch „paja toquilla“.
According to the legend, the Panama hat received its name during the visit of the Panama hat in 1913. On this occasion, Teddy Roosevelt was gifted an Ecuadorian straw hat and, without knowing where it came from, he thanked fort he Panama hat.
Between 1800 and 1900, the Panama hat had developped quickly and became more famous all over the world, e.g. at Paris Expo in 1900 or during the Gold Rush in California.
Today we know that the Panama hat originated from Ecuador. Its production sercrets are handed from generation to generation. Actually, it is mainly made manually in Cuenca and Montecristi.
Each Panama hat ist unique adn 100% made by hand, that’s why it needs a very special care.
CARE:
Tips for care and rollability of the Panama hats
The genuine Panama hat is a straw hat, flexible and pliant, but may also break if claimed too much or rolled and bent too often. The high-quality Panama hats are more sturdy and have a longer life time. Most of all, the modells „classic“ and „colonial“ are apted to be rolled, also the standard ones in white colour. Dyed hats are not apted to be rolled.
Fair Trade
We guarantee short trade routes and the manufacturers a purchase at fixed prices.
All colours are AZO free. Changes in colour are possible as all hats are made manually in different charges. Darker colours may bleach from the sun after some time.
Grade
The „grade“ of Panama hats indicates the quality of the weaving. The number results from the number of plait per square inch. The bigger the figure the finer the Panama hat.
Pascuali offers many grades of each modell:
Hats made in Cuenca are deliverabel in the following grades: standard, fino, extrafino (extrafino is even finer)
Hats made in Montecristi are deliverabel in the following grades: 7-8, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 19-20
Item number: 2009009
